Key Achievements

  • Members of the civil society organization and religious organizations develop their capacities in community base prevention activities. They incorporate AOD prevention activities into their organizational activity plans and work towards the reduction of the consumption of AOD and related harm considering that AOD is a hindrance to well-being and development and at the community, the level may initiate alcohol and drug treatment programs help the users to quit or reduce alcohol and drug use. CSOs develop internal policies for their membership to avoid alcohol use in their families and houses.
  • 99 Civil Society Organizations networked with Healthy Lanka continued operating at the district level are attached to District Councils they were engaged in activities of alcohol and drug prevention and in the districts as Matara 14 CSOs, Hambantota 20 CSOs, Nuwara Eliya 18 CSOs, Batticaloa 13 CSOs, Trincomalee 17 CSOs, Anuradhapura 10 CSOs, and Mullaitivu 07 CSOs. These organizations used training materials developed by Healthy Lanka on alcohol and drug prevention and gender education. Healthy Lanka management and field staff visited and conducted training for civil society leaders in the districts of Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Matara, Hambantota, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Ratnapura, Trinco, Batticaloa, Nuwara Eliya, in collaboration with the district councils of CSOs. In most of these interventions, funding was allocated by civil society organizations. These organizations are not members of SLAPA but joined with Healthy Lanka in its national advocacy efforts. Steps were taken to establish bilateral agreements with these organizations to come into a social development network with Healthy Lanka.
  • Government ministries and departments including the ministry of education, ministry of health, ministry of women and child affairs, ministry of religious affairs, Samurdhi department and NGO secretariat develop and adopt policies regulations guidelines, and instructions to reduce Alcohol and other Drug related harm in the communities that they have a reach and improve the capacity of their field officers and other relevant officers to plan, implement and monitor AOD prevention activities effectively.
  • SLAPA network improves their knowledge and skills on effective alcohol policies to control supply and demand and advocate for such policies. They conduct research and surveys to monitor alcohol and drug situations in the country and lobby policymakers to formulate and adapt alcohol policies and effective implementation of such policies, regulations, and declarations. SLAPA mobilizes the community and links other community organizations, key persons, and academics to advocate for formulating and implementing effective alcohol policies. They organize public campaigns and media conferences to persuade policymakers to formulate effective alcohol policies
