Society resists women human right defenders who empower vulnerable women as society is used to situations where women are oppressed. This leads to threats to personal safety of Women Human Right Defenders. Empowered women can only lead to a more developed and cohesive society, hence, women human right defenders must persist and continue in their endeavor.
"Women’s rights are the same as human rights; 16 days of activism must be targeted at those who do not observe this. Every year gaps are identified and a theme to address these gaps is developed for 16 days of activism against gender based violence. This theme should not be limited to the 16 days but must extend beyond until the gap is addressed . This year’s theme is one that resonates with many women. I hope that we can sustain the implementation of it to see an outcome
"Decisions that have a direct impact on women must be taken by women, especially when it comes to decisions about their bodies. Laws, policies and decisions about abortion, period product taxes, marriage, protection from gender based violence against women must be decided by women. In order for more women to contribute towards decision making it is the duty of the country and its stakeholders to ensure that their right to education and expression are ensured and upheld."
"Women and girls in the hill-country are enduring violence including domestic violence, labour inequality, sexual harassment for a very long time. To ensure that women and girls in the hill country are treated with more respect, dignity and equality, they must be included in National mainstream strategies especially when it comes to development of women and children."
“Due to the economic crisis, many men have become addicted to drugs and alcohol due to the rise in illegal businesses. As a result, domestic violence is on the rise, most of the victims of domestic violence are women and girls.
“It is appreciated that Sri Lanka signs international treaties and conventions to prevent violence against women. However, it sometimes seems that it lacks interest in implementing them fully. It is my hope that Sri Lanka will play an active role in preventing oppression of women and girls and strictly enforce laws against any form of oppression.”
“Due to the present economic crisis, women have taken up unsafe foreign employment often leaving their children behind. Both these children and mothers go through numerous abuses mentally, physically and sexually. In order to change this, job opportunities must be created to provide a safe environment with sufficient income at their place of origin/in Sri Lanka.”
“Though activism for gender based violence is for 16 days, women are being abused all 365 days. The economic crisis, the pandemic and the civil war have increased gender based violence and had a significant impact on women's mental and physical health. Some women are also sexually abused at their workplace. On the other hand, some women have entered prostitution. This must change. Women must be supported through livelihood initiatives and their rights must be upheld and protected.”
“Sustainability globally depends on women's labour, engagement, participation, equality and dignity. 52% of Sri Lanka's population is women. 56% of the electorate, migrant women, plantation women, agricultural labor women, fisher women all play their role and are the backbone of Sri Lanka's economy. Therefore it is the prime duty of mankind to protect their rights, interests and treat them with dignity. So, as a woman activist, it is my opinion that we will continue to fight for women and give voice (to their needs)”
