Mrs. Mahendran Sukirthapiriya, a 63-year-old differently-abled person, resides in Srinarayanapuram Village in the Muthur DS Division of Trincomalee District. She is educated up to GCE A/L and worked as a teacher for one year at Sri Sanmuka Hindu College, Trincomalee. She is married to Periasamy Mahendran and has a son who is now married and living separately with his family.
Although Mrs. Sukirthapiriya had an interest in civil activism since childhood, she fully dedicated herself to this path only in 2009. In 2021, she joined AHAM Humanitarian Resource Center as a civil activist, driven by her frustration over the lack of support for people with disabilities, female-headed families, women seeking self-employment, and those petitioning for human rights issues.
She shared, "They dealt with land issues in our village. I was included in the training on basic land law and so on. Only then did we get a thorough understanding of AHRC and a basic understanding of land law. I clarified to my villagers the legal procedures for resolving land disputes. I realized that working through civil society organizations would be more successful than doing such activities individually. AHRC's activities, which began in July 2023, demonstrated that we can make recommendations on human rights issues through traditional civil organizations, strengthening our organization."
Through participation in training sessions on documentation, networking discussions, setting up opinion forums, and public storytelling, she developed her skills and gained clarity on how to move forward with recommendations and legal actions when identifying problems. "I am sharing this knowledge with the community working with me, enriching them as much as I can. The primary reason for all this progress is the training and guidance provided by AHRC. I hope to receive more such training and encourage the youth community further, aiming to see a massive change through this organization," said Mrs. Sukirthapiriya.
